Title, pp574, 5 full page illustrations, 2 of which tinted. Binding cloth is faded, age soiled and rubbed. Re-backed in buckram of sympathetic faded colour. New endpapers and new map pockets. Some top edges uncut to Vol. 1. Light age tone to page edges. Illustrations have a few light fox marks and most with original tissue guards. Maps are in good, clean order. Some small slits at fold lines, a little print offset where folded. A good complete pair of rare books. Dust wrapper unclipped but chipped and torn at edges and two thirds of the dust wrapper spine missing. Pp 204. Title page vignette by Reynolds Stone and including 12 pages of black and white photographs, drawing in the text by the author and folded map of Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean area. All pages and illustrations tight, bright and clean. Booksellers label of L Simmons/Fleet Street on front pastedown. Neat ownership mark in pencil on front free endpaper “Izzard/Beirut/June 1956. This person could be Ralph or Molly Izzard. Ralph Izzard a journalist who spent many years in Beirut had also been involved in Naval Intelligence and acquainted with Ian Fleming. His wife Molly was a wartime FANY and later went on to use her inquisitive skills to study the works of Freya Stark completed a very interesting biography of Stark. Binding a little bumped at edges and cloth a little scratched. Laid on front free endpaper is a printed paper from John Murray with the publishers compliments and contemporary typed “Sent at Miss Stark’s instructions.” Above this in pencil is the signature of H de Gaury/Easter 1942. On the facing front pastedown is the armorial book plate of Gerald de Gaury. Gerald de Gaury was a friend of Freya Stark and an experienced traveller, photographer, Arabist and diplomat. Laid on front pastedown is a card printed “With the Author’s Compliments”, also, armorial bookplate of Gerald de Gaury. There is some marginalia on pages 66,113, 117 in ink and on back endpaper in pencil, in the hand of de Gaury; commenting on various aspects of the text. Some light marks on the front cover and rust residue from a paperclip on the front free endpapers. Print is strong and binding is tight. Gerald de Gaury, friend of Freya Stark was an experienced traveller, photographer, Arabist and diplomat and perhaps his remarks reflect his view on the situation recorded in this Freya Stark autobiography. From Nance. Also included, loose, is a letter from Nancy Blishen to Arnold and Sim Rattenbury and some contemporaneous reviews of the book including one written by Nicholas Tucker, which, from the letter written by Nancy was not accepted by a newspaper. She writes of the comments she has received from people about the book and of the Newspapers ….” ‘Oh, I did love Mind How you Go. There is no admonishment of Edwards astonishing powers of selection and description. The wit is, if anything, even greater. Our battles with age and deterioration of our tiresome bodies are superbly described. I kept on giving little yelps of recognition’.
